Big Backyard Cricket Bash Rules

It’s Cricket, in your thongs, a singlet with a beer in one hand and the ball in the other. It’s fun, social, mildly competitive, Welcome to Urban Rec’s BYC.

  • Mixed Teams of 6(Squads of up to 10, 8 is perfect) Must have 1 of either sex on the field while fielding.
  • Each team Bats and Fields for 10 overs, an over consist of 6 fair balls (unless you ask the umpire how many to come then there’s always 2 to come)
  • At the beginning of each game your event host will stick their keys into the pitch this will be followed by a coin toss the team that wins the toss can choose to bad or bowl first.
  • The team who gets the most runs in the 10 overs is the winner.

The Field

  • Games will be played on a field or backyard which may have natural obstacles, your event host will take you through the field prior to the game. I.e. You are out if you hit the ball over the fence or into that bush.
  • The pitch will be 12 paces long so the size will depend on the size of your event host. The creases will be marked by cones or a line. We only play towards one end.
  • The boundaries will either be marked by a fence or cones.

Batting

  • The Aim is to let each team member get a bat over the 10 overs so it’s pretty easy to get out
  • The Batting team can bat all of their squad members.
  • There is 2 batsmen/women on the field at any time
  • The batting team must have a batting order and cannot change the order once the game has started.
  • There is no number of wickets i.e. the batting team cannot be all out. Your team keeps going through the batting order until the 10 overs are finished.
  • No player can be dismissed first ball.
  • It’s tip and run which means if you hit the ball you must run. If you choose to hit the ball with your body i.e. pad the ball away…. Tip and run applies.
  • The following are the methods of dismissal. Bowled, stumped, run out, hit wicket, caught, caught one hand one bounce, 6 and out, specific field rules may also lead to your downfall, the umpire/event host ruling that you are being a bit of a dick and missing 3 fair balls in a row.
  • Natural obstacles are in play and will be explained to both teams by the event host prior to the game.
  • Your total is the amount of runs you have amassed at the end of your 10 overs.

Bowling

  • At the beginning of the innings the bowling team gets to choose the ball they wish to play with. From a selection provided by the event host.
  • Each team member must bowl at least 1 over
  • There are six members on the fielding team at any time, the fielding team can sub players in between overs.
  • If your squad is over 6 members all squad members must bowl.
  • An over is 6 fair balls, in the event of a wide or no-ball the batting team will get one run and 1 extra ball (no free hit).
  • No bouncers don’t be a dick
  • If you can bowl over arm that’s how you bowl if not and over-arm or underarm through is permitted.
  • It is up to the event hosts discretion if they want to shorten the pitch for a bowler that is struggling with the distance of the pitch to make the game more fun and competitive for everyone.
  • Bowlers can only bowl off a 3-pace max run up. Players are allowed one ball an over off a long run up.

Fielding

  • There a 6 players on the bowling team at any time.
  • Automatic wicky may be in play depending on the venue, your event host will explain this prior to your game.
  • All Fielders must change their position at the end of each over.
  • Extra fielders can be added if both teams have the same amount of players and it’s agreed upon prior to the game commencing.

14.    FAIRPLAY SYSTEM

Each league night you will have an Event Host onsite, but these guys are not official referees. Urban Rec is a recreational league which practices a fair-play and fun-first policy, meaning you should be making your own calls on the game. The Event Host will be there to make the calls not made by individuals, keep time, and help guide the games within the game play rules. The Urban Rec Event Host has the final say on any issue that cannot be self-resolved.

15.    SPORTSMANSHIP

All Urban Rec participants have read and agreed to the Urban Rec Code of Conduct. We also exercise a strict Disciplinary Policy. If you are seen to be rude in any way or not playing within the respect of the rules and Code of Conduct, you will be asked by the Urban Rec Staff to sub out of the game. If after returning to the game your attitude does not improve you will be asked to leave the venue, and an assessment will be made if you can play again. We do not tolerate idiots. Play fair.
